Is double cleansing helping your skin?

When your skin is free of impurities, makeup, and sunscreen residue, it can absorb skincare products a lot more effectively.

The double cleansing method involves washing your face twice, at night, with two different types of cleansers. The first step is an oil-based cleanser to help melt away impurities, like makeup, oil, sunscreen, and excess sebum, on the skin’s surface. The second cleanse requires a water-based cleanser to whisk away any remaining residue and impurities.

While there’s no denying that deep cleansing is the foundation of a healthy skincare routine, over-cleansing in some cases can be detrimental. While it may seem very tempting to add viral products to your cart, remember that with skincare, a ‘one size fits all’ approach is never going to work.

WHO SHOULD DOUBLE-CLEANSE AND WHEN?

Although we’re all after the same goal of a clean face, double cleansing isn’t the best path to getting there for everyone. If you have oily skin and/or wear makeup daily, you might find double cleansing every evening works just fine for you. If your skin isn’t particularly oil-prone or you’re only an occasional makeup wearer, double cleansing every single day probably isn’t necessary— a gentle cleanser alone should do the job. And if you have rosacea, eczema, or particularly sensitive or dry skin, you may want to avoid double cleansing completely.

SO, WHEN DOUBLE CLEANSING IS GETTING ALL THAT GUNK OFF, WHAT’S THE PROBLEM EXACTLY?

The problem arises when you have dry or sensitive skin or are not a heavy makeup user. “Over-washing can lead to dryness, irritation and breakdown of the skin barrier, which subsequently causes issues like breakouts and eczema. If you go makeup-free, double cleansing might not be the routine for you.”

IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE OR ACNE-PRONE SKIN?

“It can strip away essential oils needed to keep your skin balanced. I wouldn’t recommend it for sensitive skin as it can strip off the skin’s moisture and potentially make it drier, flakier and duller.” If double cleansing is something you do want to add into your routine, with caution and opt for products that are gentle and non-irritating: “Look for oil-based cleansers that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin and free from harsh ingredients like fragrances, alcohols, and sulfates. Look for formulations that won’t clog pores—keywords being ‘non-comedogenic’ or ‘suitable for acne-prone skin.

“Double cleansing can be very, very stripping to the skin”.

For the same reason, regardless of your skin type, double cleansing always “needs to be followed up with a proper moisturizer to reinstall hydration immediately”.

TAKES IT ALL OFF

Let’s face it: a quick wash of the face doesn't always remove your makeup or pore-clogging impurities, like sweat from your spin class. While most cleansers are formulated to remove makeup, if you’re a speed washer, you’re likely not washing it all off. Here’s where double cleansing is a win-win: the oil-based cleanser helps break down your makeup (including the budge-proof variety), as well as excess oil, sweat and sunscreen. Then, the water-based cleanser finishes the task by whisking away any loose or leftover residue.

And, as with any new skin-care technique, start slow—try a double cleanse, then closely monitor how your skin reacts. Happy cleansing!
